8 ChatGPT Copywriting Tips & 3 Prompts For Writing That Sounds Human
Question: How do you feel about ChatGPT, the AI software that’s changed the world this year? Personally, I'm hooked! I lean on it daily to spruce up almost everything I jot down. I joke that ChatGPT is my new best friend because of all the time I spend engaging with ChatGPT.
I use ChatGPT for everything. Here's what I typically run past ChatGPT before I hit publish:
Emails
Attention-grabbing headlines and subject lines
Snappy summaries
SEO-friendly meta descriptions
Blog articles
Bios
But you know what I hate? When I read something that was so obviously written by ChatGPT. Don’t get me started when I see the word “unleashed.” I even saw a ChatGPT response on a dating app!
I was talking to a client once and she said she never uses ChatGPT; I was shocked. I use it every day. Her response was telling: “But your writing doesn’t sound like it’s from ChatGPT.”
So how do I do that? Here are my 8 tips for using ChatGPT to create decent content
(1) Opt for ChatGPT Plus.
ChatGPT Plus is the premium tier of ChatGPT and gives you access to ChatGPT 4.0. The subscription costs $20 a month, but trust me, it's well worth the investment for the quality boost you get.
Here's a little comparison to show you what I mean. I asked ChatGPT 4.0 and ChatGPT 3.5 to “suggest 5 ways to polish this headline: 5 Tips for Using ChatGPT."
Here are the results.
From ChatGPT 4.0:
Five Essential Strategies for Mastering ChatGPT
Maximize Your Productivity with These 5 ChatGPT Tips
Top 5 ChatGPT Hacks You Need to Know
Unlock the Power of ChatGPT with These 5 Key Tips
5 Expert Tricks to Enhance Your ChatGPT Experience
And from ChatGPT 3.5:
Enhance Engagement: "Maximize Your Experience with ChatGPT: 5 Pro Tips!"
Streamline Your Interaction: "Unlock ChatGPT's Full Potential with These 5 Expert Strategies!"
Elevate Your Conversations: "Master ChatGPT: 5 Techniques for Seamless Communication!"
Optimize Your Results: "Get the Most Out of ChatGPT: 5 Essential Tips for Success!"
Refine Your Interactions: "Polish Your Conversations with ChatGPT: 5 Key Tips for Mastery!"
Notice how the responses from ChatGPT 4.0 seem a bit more polished and precise? That’s why the upgrade is so helpful, especially if you want to invest in your content and save hundreds of hours.
Also, just a heads-up: with ChatGPT Plus, you get 40 premium messages every three hours on ChatGPT 4.
Don’t burn through your quota for simpler tasks; you've got unlimited access on ChatGPT 3.5 for things like whipping up a quick meta description, adding emojis, or other basic content needs.
(2) Hand ChatGPT a draft and let it do its magic to polish your draft.
Here’s a tip: Instead of having ChatGPT create content from scratch, it’s usually more effective to give ChatGPT something you've already drafted and ask ChatGPT to polish the content.
Take this example: I asked ChatGPT 4.0 to come up with blog post headlines about "chatgpt tips," and here’s what I got:
"Unlock the Power of ChatGPT: 10 Pro Tips to Enhance Your Conversational AI Experience"
"From Novice to Expert: Essential ChatGPT Tricks for Every User"
"Maximize Your Productivity with ChatGPT: Advanced Techniques You Need to Know"
"ChatGPT Secrets: Unveiling Lesser-Known Features for Power Users"
"Transform Your ChatGPT Sessions: Top Strategies for Getting the Best Responses"
These headlines are pretty good, but they missed including the key phrase "ChatGPT tips," which I needed for SEO. This is why I find it more useful to have ChatGPT polish what I've already started rather than have it create something new.
Also, a heads up: ChatGPT’s content can come off as a bit formulaic and lacks the emotional punch needed to really connect with clients and drive conversions. That's why we're talking about making copy that sounds human—because that's what really resonates with people, and honestly, it’s something a lot of content creators struggle with. In this case, ChatGPT didn’t quite hit the mark on including that personal touch.
(3) Give ChatGPT all the context you can.
The more you tell ChatGPT about yourself, your audience, what you’re trying to achieve, and the vibe you’re going for, the better it can tailor its responses to suit your needs. ChatGPT really shines when it has enough context to work with.
So, say you're a web designer focusing on female health coaches. You could ask ChatGPT for five blog post ideas about what kind of content these coaches should have on their websites to attract more clients. The clearer you are with your request, the more on-point ChatGPT’s suggestions will be.
(4) Need a headline or subject line? Request 5 variations from ChatGPT.
Here's a tip I absolutely love:
Did you notice earlier when I asked ChatGPT to “draft 5 potential blog post headlines about ChatGPT tips?” Here’s why I did that:
Instead of just asking for one idea, I always go for multiple. Why? Well, if you’re using ChatGPT 4.0 often as I do, you know we’re capped on how many messages we can send: 40 messages every three hours. To get around this, I ask for several ideas in one go. This way, I save my message count and make each interaction count.
Feel free to choose any variations that work for you, but just a heads up—asking for too many can sometimes lower the quality. I’ve found that asking for five hits the sweet spot, though you might want to play around with it, maybe even bump it up to ten, and see what you get.
Asking for multiple options saves you time and gives you ideas to work with right away, making your content creation process faster and smoother.
(5) Don't settle on the first version. Always ask ChatGPT to regenerate the content at least twice.
Here's another hack I love: the ChatGPT regenerate button. This nifty feature, represented by a circular button beneath each response, lets you have ChatGPT take another shot at answering your query. Why am I a fan?
Content that improves: If the initial output from ChatGPT isn't quite right, clicking this button often leads to a better response.
More Options: Even if you're satisfied with what ChatGPT produces, hitting the regenerate button can offer you additional choices, enhancing the quality of content you gather.
I typically use this feature two to three times to refine the responses. I try not to go beyond that, though, because the content can get a bit muddled. This little trick is so helpful for fine-tuning the AI's output to suit your needs better!
(6) Pair ChatGPT with Grammarly and Headline CoSchedule for that extra layer of finesse.
ChatGPT is fantastic for editing and polishing content, but I like to take things further. I always run my headlines through Headline Analyzer to make sure they grab attention. I aim for a score of at least 70 because anything above that is considered engaging.
For instance, the headline generated by ChatGPT, "ChatGPT Secrets: Unveiling Lesser-Known Features for Power Users," only scored 52, so it needed some tweaking.
I also swear by Grammarly for fine-tuning all my writing, including content created by ChatGPT. It's great for catching those sneaky typos, run-on sentences, and passive voice issues. Honestly, I use Grammarly on almost everything—it's like having a personal editor at my fingertips!
(7) Organize each ChatGPT chat by type.
I tailor my ChatGPT sessions to maintain a distinct voice for different businesses and platforms. For instance, I have dedicated chats for emails, blog posts, YouTube summaries, and pitches.
This approach allows me to ensure that each interaction remains unique and consistent with each business's specific vibe. It also keeps the communication style distinct and aligned with my brand's personality.
(8) A quick heads-up: ChatGPT-generated content can feel mechanical or cheesy. It’s easy to spot from 1000 feet away.
Here's a final tip: Avoid posting content exclusively generated by ChatGPT. It might not be the best way to convert visitors into customers or create truly engaging copy. Instead, always start with your input and then let ChatGPT enhance it. You'll find the results way more effective—like a thousand times better!
**BONUS TIP***
Since you've stuck around, let me share another favorite tip: I absolutely love using ChatGPT for brainstorming. Whether it’s coming up with ideas for podcasts, blog posts, social media content, new businesses, or lead magnets, ChatGPT is my go-to for bouncing around ideas. It gives me feedback and points out angles I might not have considered.
For instance, I was thinking about starting a podcast featuring interviews with creators and entrepreneurs about their journeys. ChatGPT was incredibly helpful in brainstorming potential themes and directions for the podcast.
Remember, the more detailed content you provide ChatGPT, the better and more useful the feedback will be.
